The Narrated step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Draw a circle near the top of the paper as a guide for Craig's head. First make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. For every step, sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a lid.
Step 2: Draw a curved vertical line across the circle as a guide to help you place Craig's facial features later. Closer to the bottom, draw a curved horizontal construction line for another guide line.
Step 3: Below the head, draw a small rectangle as a guide for Craig's body. Pay attention to the size of the body in relation to the head. At the top, draw two short lines for the neck.
Step 4: On the top left corner of the body, draw an angled line as a guide for the first arm. On the bottom end of the line, draw a small circle as a guide for Craig's hand. It's okay to overlap the other shapes.
Step 5: On the top, right side of the body, draw another line that angles to the right as a guide for Craig's other arm. At the end of the line draw a slightly bigger circle for the other hand.
Step 6: Under the body, draw two long, vertical lines as guides for Craig's legs. Pay attention to the size of the legs in relation to the body. At the bottom, draw two shorter lines as guides for the feet.
Step 7: On the right side, draw a long, vertical line as a guide for the staff. Draw this line across the middle of the hand. The line should be almost as tall as Craig.
That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing of Craig Williams from Craig of the Creek.
Step 8: Inside the head, where the guides intersect, draw a small wavy line for Craig's nose. The shape should be similar to a curvy letter W.
Step 9: Above the nose, draw a two big ovals for Craig's eyes. The eyes should sit directly on top of the horizontal guide and on either side of the vertical guide. The edges of the eyes should almost touch each other.
Step 10: Inside the eyes, draw two smaller ovals and shade them for Craig's pupils. The pupil on the left should be near the middle of the eye and the pupil on the right should be close to the left edge. Above the eyes, draw two small lines for the eyebrows.
Step 11: Below the nose, draw a thin, long shape similar to a sausage for Craig's mouth. The right edge of the mouth should touch the edge of the initial circle for the head. Inside the mouth, draw four short, vertical lines for the teeth. Above and below the mouth, draw a couple of short curved lines for the lips.
Step 12: To the left of the head, draw a big C shaped line for Craig's ear. Pay attention to the placement of the ear. Use the initial lines inside the head as guides.
Step 13: To the right of the big circle, draw a long, vertical line for the side of Craig's head. Below that line, draw a line that stretches to the right then curves back down and back inward to the bottom of the initial circle for the cheek.
Step 14: Above the ear, draw a line that curves toward the top of the head for the first part of Craig's head. Follow the path of the initial circle but make the line longer for the rest of the head. Inside the head, above the eyebrows, draw a curved, horizontal line for the hairline. Bend this line down toward the ear on the left side.
Step 15: Darken the small lines under the head for Craig's neck. Add a series of longer curved lines around the neck for the collar and hood. Across the torso, draw two long, diagonal lines for the satchel's strap.
Step 16: Use the angled line on the left as a guide to draw the first arm. Draw the shape of Craig's arm around the guide. Keep the lines close to the guide for a thin arm. Use the circle at the bottom as a guide to draw the hand. Darken the circle but draw a series of short, curved lines on the edges of the circle for the rolled-up fingers.
Step 17: Use the rectangle under the head as a guide to draw Craig's torso. Darken the sides of the shape but make the lower, right side bulgier. Add a line across the middle for the hoodie's zipper but don't overlap the satchel's strap. Add an extra line at the bottom for the belt.
Step 18: Draw the bottom part of Craig's staff around the initial vertical guide line. Make the top part wide and gradually make the shape thinner toward the bottom. At the top, draw a half-circle for the middle part of the staff.
Step 19: Above the half-circle, add a small cube by first drawing three short vertical lines. Connect the lines at the top and bottom using short vertical lines. Above that draw a diamond using a few angled lines. Add a few lines inside the shape for detail on the diamond.
Step 20: Draw the shape of Craig's other arm around the angled line. Keep the edges close to the guide for a thin arm. Draw a series of small, curved lines along the edges of the initial small circle for the fingers. The shapes of the fingers should overlap the shape of the staff.
Step 21: Use the vertical line on the lower, left side as a guide to draw Craig's first leg. Draw the leg around the guide but keep the shape thin. At the bottom, draw a curved shape for the shoe. Add a line close the bottom edge of the pants for the cuff.
Step 22: Use the vertical line on the right as a guide to draw the other leg the same way. Draw the shape of the leg around the guide but keep it thin. On the top part of the leg, draw a long, curve line for the rest of the satchel. Don't overlap the shape of the leg.
Step 23: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.
Final Step: Color your Craig of the Creek drawing using colored pencils, markers or crayons! Use brown for the skin and black for the hair and belt. Color the middle part of the hoodie light blue and the sleeves yellow. Use blue green for the satchel and dark blue for the pants. Color the staff dark brown and use dark blue, blue and light blue for the diamond.
