Superman

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Superman from Justice League Unlimited. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Draw Superman Step 1

Step 1: Start by drawing an oval near the top half of the page. This will be the basic shape for Superman’s head. It doesn’t have to be perfect. I’s just a guide.

Draw Superman Step 2

Step 2: Under the oval draw an angled line with three corners. This will be Superman's jaw and chin.

Draw Superman Step 3

Step 3: Next draw a curved vertical line from the top of the oval to the bottom of the lower chin line. Draw a curved horizontal line across the oval and a smaller horizontal line at the halfway point between it and the bottom of the oval. These are construction lines that will help you place Superman’s facial features later on.

Draw Superman Step 4

Step 4: Draw a series of lines below the entire shape as a guide for Superman's thick neck.

Draw Superman Step 5

Step 5: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Superman shape, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Draw Superman Step 6

Step 6: Draw Superman's eyes sitting on top of the horizontal line and on either side of the vertical line. They consist of two small lines with a half circle under each as the pupil.

Draw Superman Step 7

Step 7: Above each eye, draw a thick shape similar to an upside-down check mark for Superman's eyebrows. Angle the eyebrows down toward his nose to give him that heroic stare.

Draw Superman Step 8

Step 8: Use the small horizontal line as a guide to draw Superman's nose. The nose is basically a line that begins at the eyebrow, goes down to the right side of the small horizontal line and then goes back left to create an angle. Draw a tiny curved line on the left for Superman's nostril.

Draw Superman Step 9

Step 9: Draw a horizontal line under the nose near the bottom half of the original circle for his mouth. Draw another horizontal line of the same length under that line, but draw this line just outside the original circle for Superman's bottom lip.

Draw Superman Step 10

Step 10: On the left side of the circle under the horizontal construction line, draw a curved line similar to the letter C for Superman's ear. Draw a few curved lines within the ear for the inner structure.

Draw Superman Step 11

Step 11: Superman's hair is a bit tricky, so it’s divided into three parts. First draw the curl on Superman's forehead by drawing two wavy lines that come to a point and form a shape similar to a thick letter S (for Superman!). Use the vertical construction line as a guide to start drawing the lines.

Draw Superman Step 12

Step 12: Draw Superman's hairline by drawing another line behind the curl that stretches from the right side of the circle to the left, then down to his ear.

Draw Superman Step 13

Step 13: Draw another curved line for the top of Superman's hair. This line starts at the top of his ear, goes over the original circle and ends on the right side of the circle just below the hairline.

Draw Superman Step 14

Step 14: Darken Superman's jaw and chin. Use the original circle as a guide to draw the right side of Superman's face. When you’re drawing the line for the right side of the face, be sure to dip it in toward the right eye a bit to create Superman's cheekbone.

Draw Superman Step 15

Step 15: Draw Superman's neck by darkening the original lines and drawing a couple more within the neck for the muscular structure.

Draw Superman Step 16

Step 16: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Superman from Justice League Unlimited. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.

Draw Superman Step 17

Step 17: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Superman! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Superman drawing.

Draw Superman Last Step

Final Step: For a completely finished Superman drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color his hair black except for a wavy band in the middle; color that blue. The blue band is optional; you can color all of his hair black, but the blue just gives it more shine and volume. Superman's skin is peach color, but if you don’t have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. Experiment! That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Superman from Justice League Unlimited.
