The Narrated step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.
Step 1: Draw a big oval as a guide for Piplup's head. First make four marks to determine the oval's height and width. Make sure that the marks for the oval's width are farther apart than the marks for the oval's length. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.
Step 2: Inside the oval, draw two intersecting lines. These are construction guides that will help you place Piplup's facial features later on. Curve the lines so that they contour to the shape of the oval. The vertical line should be to the left of center and the horizontal line should be close to the bottom edge of the oval.
Step 3: Under the head, draw a circular shape for Piplup's body. Pay attention to how small this shape is in relation to the head. The top part of the this shape will be hidden behind the head.
Step 4: On the sides of the body, draw two long, thin shapes as guides for Piplup's arms. The base of the arms should be wide and the tips should be thin and pointy like leaves. The arm on the right should be next to the head. Under the body, draw a couple of curved lines for the feet. The feet should be very small in relation to the rest of the body.
That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing of the Pokemon Piplup.
Step 5: On top of the horizontal construction guide, draw two ovals for Piplup's eyes. Use the vertical line as a guide to help you determine the space between the eyes. The eye on the left should be smaller because the head is slightly turned. Inside the eyes, near the top, draw small circles for highlights. In the middle of the eyes draw smaller ovals and shade them in for the pupils. Don't overlap the highlight circles as you shade the pupils.
Step 6: Draw an arc-like shape where the construction lines intersect for Piplup's beak. Close-off the arc at the bottom and add an extra line underneath for the bottom section of the beak. The beak should be close to the eye on the left.
Step 7: Draw two long curved lines over the eyes for the pattern on Piplup's head. The line on the left should start at the beak and end on the left edge of the head. The line on the right should almost surround the eyes. Between the lines, above the beak, draw a W-shaped line for more of the pattern.
Step 8: Darken the first oval to create Piplup's head. Make the bottom sides of the shape slightly wider than the initial oval. The bottom edge of the head should also be flatter than the oval.
Step 9: Under the head, draw two curved lines for the collar-like section on Piplup's body. The curved line in the middle should be wider than the curved line on the far left. To the right, draw a thin shape over the shape of the arm.
Step 10: Darken the circular shape under the head for Piplup's body. Make the bottom edge flatter than the initial guide. Inside the body, draw two small circles for the button like section. Make the circle on the left smaller. Above the arm on the right, draw two short arcs for the tail-like section.
Step 11: Darken the guides on the sides of the body to create Piplup's arms. Don't overlap certain sections of the body as you darken these lines. At the bottom, darken the curved shapes for the feet. Draw short lines inside the feet to separate the toes.
Step 12: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner Piplup drawing.
Final Step: Color your drawing using colored pencils, markers, crayons or anything else! Use dark blue for the head, the top of the body and the eyes. Use light blue for the rest of the body and section above the beak. Color the beak and feet yellow. That's it! You know how a finished drawing of a Piplup from Pokemon.
