To draw Coraline step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to go at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below. The new lines in each step are shown in red, and each step is explained in the text below the photo, so you'll know exactly what to draw in each step. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods! Take your time and draw at your own pace.

The written step-by-step video tutorial:

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Step 1: Start by drawing a small circle at the top of the paper as a guide for Coraline's head. First make four small marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a small, circular object like a coin or a lid.

Step 2: Inside the head, draw two curved, intersecting lines to help you place Coraline's facial features later on. The vertical line should be in the middle, while the horizontal line should be a bit lower than the middle.

Step 3: Below the head, add the guide for the body by first drawing a horizontal line at the top. Under the horizontal line, draw two long, vertical lines that slope outward for the sides of the body guide. Close the shape with a horizontal line that's longer than the top side. Connect Coraline's head to the body using two short, vertical lines as the guide for the neck.

Step 4: On the left side of the torso, draw a long, angled line as a guide for the first arm. On the bottom end, draw a small shape similar to a tilted letter D as a guide for the hand. On the right side, draw a slightly shorter angled line as a guide for Coraline's other arm. On the bottom, draw another small, D-shaped line as a guide for the other hand.

Step 5: Under the body, on the left side, draw a long, vertical line as a guide for Coraline's first leg. Slope the line to the left a bit. At the bottom, draw a small, tilted oval as a guide for the foot. To the right, draw another long, vertical line as a guide for the other leg. Draw another tilted oval at the bottom as a guide for the other foot.

That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing.

Step 6: Inside the head, on top of the horizontal line, draw two small ovals for Coraline's eyes. Use the initial lines as a guide to help you with the size and position of the eyes.

Step 7: Inside each eye, draw a tiny circle for the irises. In the middle of each iris, add a dot for the pupils. Directly on the top edge of the eye on the left, draw a short, horizontal line for the first eyebrow. Higher above the eye on the right, draw a short, curved line for Coraline's other eyebrow.

Step 8: Directly where the guide lines intersect, draw a line that angles to the right for the nose. Coraline's nose curves to the right. To the left, draw a shorter angled line for the rest of the nose.

Step 9: Below the nose, draw a long, curved line for Coraline's smile. Above and below the smile, draw two short, curved lines for the lips.

Step 10: On the top, left side of the head, draw the small dragonfly hair clip using a few curved lines. The dragonfly is made up of four small arcs for the wings, a small arc for the head and a thin, long tail. Draw a curved, horizontal line across the forehead for the first part of Coraline's hair. Draw a shorter curved line to the right for the other side of the parted hair. To the left of the head, draw a wavy, vertical line for the side of the hair. Add jagged lines at the bottom for the tips. To the left draw a short, curved line for the ear sticking out from behind the hair.

Step 11: To the right of the head, draw a curved, vertical line for the other side of Coraline's hair. At the bottom, draw a few jagged lines for the tips of the hair. On top of the initial circle, draw a couple of sloping lines to finish the shape of the hair. Curve the top part of the hair where the part is. Draw a curved line on the right for a bit of the other ear.

Step 12: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the rest of the head. Follow the edge of the circle but make the shape of Coraline's head wider as you darken the line. Darken the short lines under the head for the neck.

Step 13: Draw a couple of short lines at the base of the neck for the raincoat's collar. Farther out away from the neck, draw a few longer, curved lines for the raincoat's hood. Use the top line for the body as a guide to help you place the line for the hood. Angle one of the curved lines in the middle down for the raincoat's opening. Don't overlap Coraline's hair as you draw the curved lines for the hood.

Step 14: Use the small, D-shaped line on the left side of the body as a guide to draw the first hand. Draw a series of thin, long shapes along the inner, curved edge of the guide for the fingers. Follow the curvature of the guide. The fingers at the bottom should be smaller. Close off the shape at the top and use the angled line above as a guide to draw the arm. Draw the shape of Coraline's arm around the guide. Use curved lines along the way for creases on the raincoat. Don't draw the edges of the arm too far away from the guide or the sleeve will be too wide. Curve the line in the middle for the elbow and then darken the top part of the guide.

Step 15: Use the shapes on the right side of the body as guides to draw Coraline's other hand and arm the same way. Draw four thin, small shapes inside the D-shaped guide for the fingers. Draw a few curved lines along the side of the body for the wrinkles on the coat's sleeve. Darken the initial guide line. Draw a few curved lines at the bottom for more creases on the sleeve.

Step 16: Draw two long, diagonal lines across the body for the bag's strap. Don't draw the lines too far apart. The bottom of the strap should meet the hand on the right. Below the hand on the right, draw a thin, long shape Coraline's bag. Curve the top and bottom of this shape. Draw a line on the bottom for the lower edge of the bag.

Step 17: Darken the big rectangular shape in the middle for the main part of Coraline's raincoat. Draw a vertical line across the middle of the shape for the raincoat's opening. Don't overlap the bag's strap.

Step 18: Use the line and oval on the lower, left side as a guide to draw Coraline's first leg. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the skinny leg around it. When you get the shape of the leg right, darken the lines. Make the edges a bit wavy for the jeans' creases. Slightly below the middle of the leg, draw the top part of the rain boot. Make the top part of the rain boot wide and the bottom narrow. Darken the oval for the rest of Coraline's boot. Make the shape thin near the middle and wide at the tip. Make the bottom of the boot flatter. Draw a couple of lines at the bottom for the sole and heel.

Step 19: Use the line and oval on the right as guides to draw the other leg the same way. Lightly sketch the shape of the leg and boot around the guide. Keep the lines close so that the leg is skinny. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. A bit lower than halfway on the leg, draw the top of the boot. Make the top of the boot wide and the bottom narrow. Use the first boot as a guide to draw the second. Make the edges of the jeans wavy. Darken the oval at the bottom for the rest of Coraline's boot. As you darken the oval, make the middle part narrow and the tip wide and round. Add a couple of flat lines at the bottom for the sole and heel.

Step 20: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink your drawing of Coraline to avoid any accidents. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.

Final Step: Color your Coraline drawing using colored pencils, markers or crayons! Use blue for the hair. Use light brown for the eyes and to add shadows on the skin. Use peach for the rest of the skin and blend it with the shadows. Use light blue for the hair clip and dark red for the bag. Color Coraline's raincoat and boots yellow. Use brown for the bottom of the boots. Use dark blue for the jeans. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
