How to Draw Diddy Kong
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Diddy Kong from Nintendo's Donkey Kong video game series. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing an oval on the top part of the paper. Inside the oval, draw a curved horizontal line in the middle that contours to the shape of the circle. It doesn’t need to be perfect; it’s just a basic guide for the lower part of Diddy Kong’s head.
Step 2: Above the oval, draw the top part of a circle as a guide for the top part of Diddy Kong's head. Draw a line inside as well, but this time make it vertical. Don’t forget to bend it to contour the shape. These shapes are a basic guide for Diddy Kong’s head.
Step 3: Below Diddy Kong's head, draw an oval as a guide for his body. The head is covering the top part of the oval, so don’t draw that part.
Step 4: On the right side of Diddy Kong's body, draw a guide for his arm. The arm consists of an angled line that starts where the head meets the body. At the end of the line draw a small circle for Diddy Kong's hand, then draw five smaller lines as guides for his fingers.
Step 5: Draw a similar series of lines on the left side of Diddy Kong's body for his other arm. Diddy Kong will be waving with this hand, so point the angled line up and draw the circle for his hand on the top along with the guides for his fingers.
Step 6: On the bottom part of Diddy Kong's body, draw two angled lines as guides for his legs. At the end of each line, draw a small oval as guides for his feet.
Step 7: Draw a guide for Diddy Kong's tail on the right side of his body near the right hand. The line is similar to the letter S.
Step 8: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Diddy Kong shape, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 9: Use the first oval you drew as a guide to draw Diddy Kong’s muzzle. Darken the sides of the oval and make the left side narrower. Curve the horizontal line in the middle for his wavy smile. Draw a small line below it for his lower lip. At the top of the oval draw two small slits for Diddy Kong's nostrils.
Step 10: Draw Diddy Kong's eyes sitting on top of his muzzle. First draw a line that’s similar to the letter M. The M shape dips in the middle at the vertical guide line you drew earlier. Inside the M, draw two ovals for Diddy Kong's eyes. Inside each eye draw and shade in another oval for his pupils.
Step 11: For Diddy Kong's ear draw a long oval-like shape sitting on top of the right side of his muzzle. Draw a few curved lines within the ear as the inner structure. Draw a thin, narrow rectangle on the left side of Diddy Kong's head as the visible portion of the other ear.
Step 12: Draw Diddy Kong's cap using a few curved lines. First draw a curved horizontal line above his eyes from one ear to another. Above that line, draw a curve similar to an upside-down letter U pointing left. Then use the top part of the original circle to finish the top part of the cap.
Step 13: Use the initial lines as guides to draw the arm on the right. Thicken up the line that makes up Diddy Kong's arm. Make the top part round to indicate his shoulder and the middle part thicker for his forearm. Draw a few zigzag lines at the end to indicate where his fur ends. Thicken up the rest of the lines to create his fingers and draw an extra nub on top for Diddy Kong's thumb.
Step 14: Draw Diddy Kong's shirt and torso using the initial circle as a guide. Draw a curved horizontal line across the oval as the bottom part of the shirt and a tiny oval below it as his belly button.
Step 15: Draw a curved line near Diddy Kong's arm and on the lower part of his shirt for extra detail. Also draw a couple of stars on his shirt for the classic Diddy Kong shirt design.
Step 16: Draw the other arm the same way you drew the first arm. Thicken up the initial line and draw the zigzags for the fur. Then thicken up the other lines to draw Diddy Kong's fingers.
Step 17: Use the initial line and circle as a guide to draw the leg on the right side. Draw this in a similar way to the arms. Make the leg thicker on top and draw the zigzags at the bottom. Diddy Kong's toes are basically four half circles on the right side of the guide and one on the left side.
Step 18: Draw Diddy Kong's leg on the left side as a mirror image of the one on the right. That means it’s basically the same thing except it’s pointing the other way.
Step 19: Thicken up the initial guide line to draw Diddy Kong's tail on the right side.
Step 20: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Diddy Kong from Nintendo's Donkey Kong video game series. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 21: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Diddy Kong! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Diddy Kong drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Diddy Kong drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color his cap and shirt red. The stars on the shirt are yellow. Diddy Kong's fur and eyes are brown. The rest of him is peach. If you don’t have peach, use light brown or light orange ... experiment! That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Nintendo’s Diddy Kong.
