The written step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Draw a big oval near the top of the paper as a guide for Tom Nook's head. First make four marks to determine the oval's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Make sure that the marks for the sides of the oval are farther apart than the marks for the top and bottom. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. Leave enough room at the bottom for this Animal Crossing character's body.
Step 2: Draw a horizontal line across the oval as a construction guide to help you place Tom Nook's facial features later. Draw a curved, vertical line for another guide. Place this line closer to the left edge of the head.
Step 3: On the top, left side of the head, draw a short, wide arc as a guide for the first ear. Draw another short, wide arc on the top, right side of the head as a guide for Tom Nook's other ear.
Step 4: Below the head, draw a circle as a guide for Tom Nook's body. Use the four-marks method to draw this circle the same way you drew the first oval. The marks for the height and width of the circle should be equal in distance. Don't draw the circle too far down and pay attention to the circle's size in relation to the head.
Step 5: Draw two short, sloping lines that connect the head to the body to complete the guide for the torso. Under the body, draw two square-like, angled lines as guide for Tom Nook's shorts. Don't make these shapes too long.
Step 6: Starting under the head, draw two lines that curve outward and then down toward the body as guides for Tom Nook's arms. Pay attention to where these lines begin and end. At the bottom, draw two tiny, vertical lines as guides for this Animal Crossing character's legs.
That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing.
Step 7: Inside the head, draw two small ovals directly on top of the horizontal construction guide for the eyes. Use the vertical construction line as a guide to help you space out Tom Nook's eyes. Use the initial lines as guide for the eyes' position and size. The eye on the left should be close to the edge of the head.
Step 8: Inside each eye, draw a line that slopes down and out for Tom Nook's half-closed eyelids. Under each eyelid, draw a small U-shaped line for the irises. Draw the irises close to the right edge of the eyes. Don't make the irises too small.
Step 9: On the lower part of the head, draw a small circle for the muzzle. Use the initial lines as guides for the size and position of this Animal Crossing character's muzzle. Sketch lightly at first to get it right. On the top, left side of the circle, draw a small, angled, triangular line for the tip of Tom Nook's muzzle.
Step 10: Darken the short, wide arcs on top of the head for the ears. Within each shape, draw an even smaller arc for the inner structure of Tom Nook's ears.
Step 11: Use the first circle as a guide to draw the shape of Tom Nook's head. Darken the shape of the oval but make the bottom part wider. Draw lines that bulge out on the sides of the oval to make the shape wider. Don't make the sides bulge out too much. Make the bottom edge of the head flat.
Step 12: Use a series of curved lines to draw the mask-like pattern around Tom Nook's eyes. The line should dip low under the eyes and curve up over the muzzle. Sketch lightly at first. When you get the shape right, darken the line. At the top, follow the curvature of the head to complete the mask. The left side of the mask isn't visible because of how the head is turned. The mask doesn't touch the muzzle or eyes.
Step 13: Darken the curved line on the right side of Tom Nook's body for the first arm. Curve the bottom part of the line up to create an oval-like shape for the tip of the arm. At the top, draw a couple of curved lines for the shirt's sleeve and cuff.
Step 14: Under Tom Nook's head, draw a series of angled lines for the shirt's collar. The left side of the collar is made up of two angled lines, and it should extend toward the guide for Tom Nook's other arm. The right side of the collar should also be made up of two angled lines, but they should be bigger.
Step 15: Draw a curved, vertical line along the left edge of the body circle for the side of the shirt. Near the bottom of the initial body circle, draw a long, curved, horizontal line for the bottom of Tom Nook's shirt. Draw a vertical, curved line close to the left side of the body for the shirt's opening.
Step 16: On the top, right side of Tom Nook's body, draw a small square for the shirt pocket. Inside the square, draw a small circle for the first part of the icon. Inside the circle, draw a small leaf with a semi-circle cut out of the side to finish the icon. Draw three tiny circles along the right side of the shirt's opening for the buttons.
Step 17: Darken the curved line on the left for Tom Nook's arm and add a couple of shorter lines near the top for the shirtsleeve.
Step 18: Darken the angled lines under the shirt to create Tom Nook's shorts. Draw a short line on the top, right side for a pocket and longer lines at the bottom for the cuffs.
Step 19: Use curved lines to draw the shape of Tom Nook's feet around the small vertical guides at the bottom. Don't make the shapes too thick. Make the bottom parts flat and curve the left sides for the tips of the feet. On the right side of the shorts, draw a curved line for the visible part of this Animal Crossing character's tail.
Step 20: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.
Final Step: Color your Animal Crossing character using colored pencils, markers or crayons! Use dark brown for Tom Nook's ears, mask, muzzle, hands, feet, buttons, icon and tail. Use pink for the inside of the ears. Use regular brown for the rest of the body. Use blue for the irises and yellow-orange for the icon's circle. Color the shorts light brown. Use blue-green to draw the leaf pattern on the shirt. The leaves are heart-shaped with some lines inside. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
