How to Draw Koopa Troopa
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Koopa Troopa from Super Nintendo's Mario Brothers video games. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start drawing Koopa Troopa with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don't press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: To draw Koopa Troopa, start by drawing two circles stacked on the top of each other like a snowman. Draw the top circle slightly smaller. You don't have to draw the circles perfectly. They're just guides for the Koopa Troopa's head and body.
Step 2: To the right of the top circle, draw another circle a bit smaller in size for Koopa Troopa's nose. The end result should look similar to a Venn diagram.
Step 3: Now on top of those two circles, draw two curved lines that look like hills as guides for Koopa Troopa's eyes.
Step 4: On the lower circle, draw guides for Koopa Troopa's arms. They're simply curved lines with circles at the end of them. Draw four small lines at the top of the circle of the right hand for Koopa Troopa's fingers.
Step 5: Under the lowest circle, draw guides for Koopa Troopa's legs too. Draw two vertical lines with ovals at the end for Koopa Troopa's feet.
Step 6: That's it for the initial sketch of Koopa Troopa from Nindendo's Mario Brothers video games! You have the basic Koopa Troopa shape, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 7: Draw Koopa Troopa's nose by using the circle as a guide. Draw a point on the bottom of it to form somewhat of a beak shape and draw smile line at the end of it. Also draw two curved lines on top for Koopa Troopa's nostrils.
Step 8: Darken in the basic shape of Koopa Troopa's head and the top portion of his eyes.
Step 9: Draw two curves below the shape of Koopa Troopa's eyes. For Koopa Troopa's eyelids, draw a small curved line at the end of the eye on the left that connects to the nose to create his cheek. Inside each eye, draw an oval and shade it in for his pupils. Don't shade in a small portion of each to represent glare.
Step 10: Under Koopa Troopa's head, draw two small vertical lines for his neck and two curved horizontal lines for the top of his shell or his "turtle neck."
Step 11: Use the initial line as a guide to draw Koopa Troopa's left arm. Thicken up the line to form Koopa Troopa's arm, then draw a series of curves around the circle to draw his clenched fist.
Step 12: Draw the left leg by following the initial shapes as guides. Thicken up the line first, draw a ring on top of the circle, then use curved lines to form Koopa Troopa's boot. Finally, draw lines under the boot for the soles.
Step 13: The left arm blocks some of Koopa Troopa's turtle shell, so only draw the visible portion. The base starts at Koopa Troopa's face and ends at his feet. Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the outer bit of his turtle shell.
Step 14: Draw a few lines within the turtle shell for the pattern. At the bottom of the shell, add Koopa Troopa's tail by drawing two curved lines that meet at a point.
Step 15: Darken in the initial circle shape to form the front part of Koopa Troopa's turtle shell. Then draw four curved horizontal lines in front to indicate the "bottom" part of the shell.
Step 16: Use the initial lines as a guide to draw the right hand waving. Thicken up the line to form Koopa Troopa's arm, draw a few curves for his hand and thicken up the smaller lines for his fingers.
Step 17: Finally, draw the right leg the same way you drew the left. Thicken the line, draw a ring for the top of Koopa Troopa's boot, a few curves for the boot itself and lines at the bottom for the sole.
Step 18: That's it! You now have a nice sketch of a Koopa Troopa from Nintendo's Mario Brothers video games. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look, or continue to the step below to go for a more finished look.
Step 19: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for any ink to dry, and then erase your pencil marks. You now have a finished inked drawing of a Koopa Troopa! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Koopa Troopa drawing in its entirety.
Final Step: For a completely finished Koopa Troopa drawing, you have to color it. You can use anything you want: markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color Koopa Troopa's skin portion yellow, his shell and boots green and the front of his shell and soles of his boots light brown. That's it! You now have a completed drawing of Koopa Troopa from Nintendo's Super Mario Brothers games.
