How to Draw Rosalina
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Princess Rosalina from Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing an oval that is similar to an egg in the middle of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for Rosalina’s head.
Step 2: Draw two curved lines at the bottom of the head. These will be the basic shapes for Rosalina's neck and shoulders.
Step 3: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the oval, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so they follow the contour of the shape. Draw two smaller lines in between the horizontal construction line and the bottom of the oval. These will be construction lines that will help you place Rosalina’s facial features later on.
Step 4: Now draw a guide for Rosalina's hair. Start with a line that begins on the top right side of her head, then goes down to where the two construction lines intersect, and finally end the line on the lower left side of the head. Then draw a curved shape on the right side of Rosalina's head.
Step 5: On top of the horizontal construction line and on the right side of the vertical line, draw a half circle as a guide for Rosalina's eye. Only draw one eye because the other one is hiding behind her hair.
Step 6: On the right side of Rosalina's head, where the horizontal construction line meets the guide for her hair, draw a curved line similar to the letter C as a guide for her ear. Again, draw only one ear because the other one is hiding behind Rosalina's hair.
Step 7: Roughly sketch in the shape of Rosalina's crown, which sits on top of her hair. An easy way to do it is to draw two vertical lines for the sides of the crown then a big W-shape for the top of the crown.
Step 8: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape for Princess Rosalina, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 9: Darken the shape of Rosalina's eye by thickening the outer line more. Give her a couple of curved lines on top of the eye to represent her eyelashes.
Step 10: Finish Rosalina's eye by drawing a series of three ovals, one inside the other. The ovals will represent her iris, pupil and glare. Shade in the center oval or pupil. Above Rosalina's eye, draw a small curved line for her eyebrow.
Step 11: Use the top small horizontal line as a guide to draw Rosalina's nose. The shape of Rosalina's nose is similar to a diamond. Shade in the diamond and draw a small line on the left side. Then draw a small line going up and to the right to finish drawing her nose.
Step 12: Using the bottom small horizontal line as a guide, draw Rosalina lips. Darken the small horizontal line, and then draw a curved line on top for her upper lip and a curved line on the bottom for her lower lip.
Step 13: Draw the first part of Rosalina's hair by darkening the initial guide lines. Use the original oval as a guide to draw the top of her hair and give her and extra point on the right side above the original guide.
Step 14: Darken the shape of Rosalina's crown. Draw a half oval on each side and an oval in the middle to represent jewels. Surround the ovals with a few lines for extra detail.
Step 15: Draw a shape with four pointy ends under her ear for Rosalina's earrings. Draw a similar shape on the other side, but only draw a portion of it because the top part is hiding behind Rosalina's hair. Use the image above for further reference on the shape.
Step 16: Tighten the shape of Rosalina's face using the initial oval as a guide. Draw a long strand of hair on the left side of her ear. Darken the shape of the ear and draw a few lines within it for structure.
Step 17: Finish drawing the rest of Rosalina's hair by adding three spikes on the left side and a wavy line with two spikes on the right side.
Step 18: Draw the star on Rosalina's dress below her head. First draw a half circle, then surround the circle with five pointed shapes to complete the star.
Step 19: Darken Rosalina's neck and shoulders. Draw a couple of wavy lines on either side of the star below her shoulders for the top part of her dress.
Step 20: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Princess Rosalina. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the next step.
Step 21: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Princess Rosalina! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Rosalina drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Princess Rosalina drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color Rosalina's crown and star gray. Her hair is light yellow. The circle inside her star is yellow, and her earrings and eyebrows are dark yellow. The two jewels on her crown, her eyes and her dress are light blue. The jewel in the center of her crown is red, and her lips are pink. Her skin color is peach (like the other Princess!). If you don’t have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or pink. Experiment! That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Princess Rosalina from Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy.
