Materials You’ll Need
Before starting, gather these basic drawing supplies:
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Black ink pen or marker
- Drawing paper
- Colored pencils or markers
Sketch Guidelines
Using light construction lines is the secret to getting a character's proportions correct before committing to details. Sketch lightly during this phase so you can easily erase mistakes later. If you struggle with freehand circle, feel free to use a coin, bottle cap, or other circular item as a tracing guide.
Step 1: Sketch the Head
- The Base Circle: Draw a standard circle to establish the guide for the head. To make it even, mark the desired height and width with small dashes first, then connect them with smooth curves.
- Vertical Guide Line: Draw a vertical line cutting completely through the circle, extending slightly below the bottom edge. Curve this line slightly to the right to match the tilt of Rosalina's head. This line ensures proper alignment of the nose, mouth, and chin.
- Horizontal Guide Line: Draw a horizontal line across the very lower section of the circle. Position this close to the bottom edge, as Rosalina’s hairstyle requires a larger forehead area.
- The Jawline: Make a small mark on the vertical line below the circle to indicate the chin. Connect this mark to the sides of the circle using sloping lines, keeping the chin relatively pointy and curving up into the jaw.

Step 2: Add the Body & Dress in Proportion
- The Upper Body: Beneath the head, sketch a long, sloping line for the shoulders. Tilt it so the right shoulder sits slightly lower than the left. From there, draw a large V-shape downward to create a triangular torso guide.
- The Neck: Draw two short, narrow vertical lines under the head. Rosalina has stylized, slender proportions, so the neck should be thin relative to the head.
- The Dress Outline: Because Rosalina wears a floor-length gown, you can skip drawing legs entirely. Extend a long, slightly tilted vertical line down from the torso. Aim for roughly three times the length of the upper body. Draw a second line sloping outward to the left, ending at the same level. Close the bottom of the gown with a long, sweeping horizontal curve.
Step 3: Create the Arm and Hand Guides
- Left Arm: Sketch an upside-down L-shaped angled line extending upward from the left shoulder. At the tip, place a small rectangular guide for the hand, making the outer edge slightly wider than the base.
- Right Arm: Draw another angled line extending downward and slightly to the right. Cap it with a similar rectangular guide, keeping the bottom edge slightly wider than the top.

Add the Facial Features & Hair
With the guidelines set, now add Rosalina's distinctive features, including her pointy chin, star earring and crown, and her swooping bangs.
Step 4: Draw the Face
- The Eye: Position a small oval on top of the horizontal guide, just to the right of the vertical centerline. Once you are happy with the placement, darken the lines. Add short, distinct curves at the top that sweep down to the right for her long eyelashes.
- Iris and Pupil: Sketch a smaller vertical oval inside the eye for the iris, followed by an even smaller oval inside for the pupil. Shade the pupil in completely dark.
- The Nose and Mouth: Just below the intersection of your main construction guides, sketch a tiny, sharp angled line for the tip of the nose, followed by a minuscule mark to the left for the nostril. Directly below the bottom edge of your initial guide circle, draw a soft upward curve for the top lip, adding a slight smirk to the right, and finish with a small supporting curve for the bottom lip.
- The Eyebrow: Add a short, elegant arched line just above the eye.
Step 5: Create the Hair & Accessories
- The Front Bangs: Draw a long diagonal line starting above the eye area, sweeping down across the face toward the bottom left side of the head. Curve it back up to the top of the head. This completely masks her left eye, so you won't need to draw it.
- Right-Side Hair: Sketch a line above the right eye that curves outward, away from the face. Bring it up and flick it out to form stylized, sharp tips. Frame the face by drawing big, distinct chunks rather than individual hair strands.
- The Ear and Earring: Sketch a small curve on the right side of the head for the visible ear. Below it, construct her iconic four-pointed star earring. If stars are difficult to draw freehand, sketch a central diamond or cross first, then build small triangles off the four sides.
- The Left-Side Hair: Follow the original arc of your initial guide circle on the left, curving it downward to meet a sharp point near the shoulder.
- The Crown: On the top right section of her head, draw two short vertical lines. Connect them at the top using a jagged line that mimics a stylized "W" shape. Finish the crown by drawing small circles inside to represent her inset cosmic jewels.

Clothing Details, Wand & Final Details
Now turn your attention to the gown, her magical star wand, and cleaning up your linework.
Step 6: The Dress Details & Left Hand
- The Collar: Sketch a small, five-pointed star emblem right below the center of the neck. You can easily achieve a clean star shape by drawing a classic intersecting star line first and then darkening only the outer perimeter. Add the thick, sloping shoulder straps on either side.
- The Left Sleeve: Darken your arm guidelines, drawing a parallel line to give the arm realistic thickness. Add a sharp, triangular frill cuff at the wrist using wavy lines to suggest fabric folds.
- The Left Hand & Wand: Inside the rectangular hand guide, sketch a small arc for the thumb and a longer, raised arc for the index finger. Add three small, curled curves to represent the remaining fingers tucked into the palm. Draw a long, thin vertical line passing through her grip to form the wand, capped with another double-layered five-pointed star at the apex.
Step 7: The Right Sleeve & Hand
- The Right Sleeve: Trace over your right arm guide, allowing the sleeve to fan out significantly more near the forearm to create a bell-sleeve effect. Add a prominent, wavy-edged triangular frill just above the hand.
- The Right Hand: Because of the downward angle, draw a simple U-shape for the thumb. Sketch a soft guide arc below it to map out the finger lengths, then use quick vertical lines to separate the downward-pointing fingers.
Step 8: Completing the Gown & Hair
- The Dress Folds: Darken the outer edges of your lower dress guides. At the very bottom hem, replace the straight guide line with a series of connected, rolling curves to simulate heavy folds in the fabric. Add a wide, upside-down V-shaped trim pattern across the lower third of the skirt, along with a few subtle vertical crease lines to give the garment motion.
- Flowing Back Hair: To emphasize movement, draw a final, large section of hair peeking out from behind her left side, ending in a sharp point.
The Finishing Touches
With your pencil sketch complete, it is time to finalize your drawing of Rosalina!

Step 9: Inking & Erasing Guidelines
- Carefully trace over your pencil lines using a fine-tipped black pen or permanent marker. Work slowly around complex areas like the facial features and stars.
- Allow the ink to dry completely to prevent smudging.
- Use a soft eraser to gently wipe away all your remaining circular and rectangular pencil construction lines.
Step 10: Add Color!
To stay true to Rosalina's look in the Super Mario Galaxy movie, color the dress a soft, aqua blue, her hair yellow, and her crown and wand emblems gold and silver. Add deep blues and bright silver to her crown to complete her look.
