Start with Simple Lines and Shapes

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. 

 

Step 1: Start by sketching a circle as a guide for Jinu's head.

DRAWING TIP: To draw a circle, first draw four small marks for the height and width of the circle, and then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. But the circles don't have to be perfect. They're just guides.

Extend the vertical line downward so it's under the circle, and make a small mark at the bottom to indicate the edge of Jinu's lower jaw. Connect the small mark to the circle using sloping lines. Bend the tops of the lines to create a square jaw, and make the bottom part flat for the chin. Inside the circle, near the bottom, draw a long curved line as a construction guide to help you place the facial features later. The right tip should be higher up than the left.

 

Step 2: Add another vertical line across the head as another guide. On the right side of the head, add a guide for the ear. Below the head, sketch two sloping lines as guides for the neck. These lines should be pretty long in relation to the head.

That's it for the guideline! Now let's start on the final drawing.

Now Add Details

Step 3: Inside the head, on the bottom-right side, sketch a small diamond-like shape as a guide for Jinu's first eye. Pay attention to the size of the eye in relation to the head. The shape should be long and the sides pointy. To the left of the vertical construction guide, draw another shape as a guide for the other eye, but make this shape a bit smaller because the head is turned. Make the tops of the eyes thick and dark for the eyelashes. Don't draw every individual eyelash—just a thick line at the top.

Sketch small circles close to the right edges of Jinu's eyes for the irises. Make tiny circles inside each iris for highlights, and leave them blank. In the middle of the irises, draw small circles for pupils and shade them in, being careful not to overlap the small highlights circles.

 

Step 4: Above the eyes, sketch a long, thin shape for the eyebrows. The outer tips should be higher up and thinner than the inner tips. Don't draw them too high up above Jinu's eyes! The eyebrow on the left will be a bit thinner because the angle of the hear.

To the left of the vertical construction guide, place Jinu's nose by first sketching a vertical line. Create the tip of the nose by curving the line to the right below the bottom edge of the initial circle. Add the nostrils.

Below the nose, sketch a sloping horizontal line for Jinu's mouth. Don't draw this line too long. Add the top and bottom lips using curved lines. Pay attention to the distance between the lower lip and the chin.

Step 5: Darken the guide at the bottom to create the lower half of the head, curving the left side for the cheek and the right side for the strong jaw.

Darken the guide for Jinu's ear and pencil in the structure of the inner ear to finalize the shapes.

Then, above the eye on the left, draw a vertical line for the forehead.

Keep Building the Drawing Slowly

Step 6: Now add Jinu's hair, starting with a long, angled line across the forehead. The bottom of this line extends down in between the eyebrows. Use angled lines for the tips of the hair throughout the shape and sloping lines on the top of the head. Don't draw every individual hair strand—just draw clumps of hair across the head.

To the left of the ear, pencil in a triangular shape for the sideburn.

 

Step 7: Finish drawing the hair on the left side of Jinu's head.
