How to Draw Star-Lord

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Star-Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Draw Star-Lord 1

Step 1: Start with a circle near the top of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for the top part Star-Lord's head.

Draw Star-Lord 2

Step 2: Draw a small U-shaped arc under the head as a guide for the jaw and chin. These combined two shapes make the guide for Star-Lord's head.

Draw Star-Lord 3

Step 3: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the entire head, one vertical and one horizontal. These will be construction lines that will help you place Star-Lord's facial features later on.

Draw Star-Lord 4

Step 4: Draw two small circles as guides for Star-Lord's helmet's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line

Draw Star-Lord 5

Step 5: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic head shape for Star-Lord from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Draw Star-Lord 6

Step 6: Darken the initial circles to create the eyes on Star-Lord's mask. Add an extra circle outside each of the original circles to make the eyes thicker.

Draw Star-Lord 7

Step 7: Star-Lord's mask is quite complicated, so it's divided piece by piece. First draw the metallic section above the eyes as a long, wavy rectangular shape. Pay attention to the length and thickness of it.

Draw Star-Lord 8

Step 8: Now draw a portion of the helmet that covers Star-Lord's forehead. This piece is also kind of similar to a rectangle, but it's wider and there's a spike near the middle. Add two lines within the shapes for extra detail.

Draw Star-Lord 9

Step 9: Draw the side sections of Star-Lord's helmet that are closest to the eyes. These shapes curve and are a bit similar to a thick letter C. Notice that the bottoms of these shapes curve in the same direction as the initial main circle. Try to make these shapes symmetrical on either side. Everything you do on one side, try to to do equally on the other for symmetry.

Draw Star-Lord 10

Step 10: Now add the other section of the side of Star-Lord's helmet as a line that follows the path of the original circle guide and spikes at the top. The top spike on each side should extend slightly outside the initial main circle.

Draw Star-Lord 11

Step 11: Under each C-shaped section on the sides of Star-Lord's helmet, draw three small but long, oval-like shapes. The shapes should have somewhat of a diagonal orientation. Darken a bit of the side guide too.

Draw Star-Lord 12

Step 12: Draw the top part of the piston-like shapes on the sides of Star-Lord's helmet. The shapes are similar to cylinders with a line inside of them and a smaller cylinder on top. These shapes should be right along the edge of the initial U-shaped guide line.

Draw Star-Lord 13

Step 13: Now draw a series of lines for the outermost section of Star-Lord's helmet. The lines at the bottom should connect to the small cylinder shapes from the previous step.

Draw Star-Lord 14

Step 14: Now add the bottom part of the piston-like section of Star-Lord's helmet by drawing two diagonal lines on each side. Draw another thinner section above each of the lines. Pay attention to the placement of all these shapes. Use the initial lines as guides to help. In this case, notice that the piston-like shapes follow the basic path of the initial U-shaped guide.

Draw Star-Lord 15

Step 15: Draw the tips of the cylinders as triangle-like shapes with an oval at the front. Inside each of these ovals, draw a small rectangle. The two small rectangles should almost touch.

Draw Star-Lord 16

Step 16: Using a series of lines, draw a shape that connects both sides of Star-Lord's helmet. Add a few lines within this shape to give it more detail.

Draw Star-Lord 17

Step 17: Now draw the inner section of the sides of Star-Lord's helmet as two lines that bend downward. Add a couple more vertical lines for extra detail.

Draw Star-Lord 18

Step 18: Draw the middle section of Star-Lord's helmet that goes over his mouth. First draw two curved lines that connect the side of the helmet right under the eyes. Then add a series of five angled lines below them that go down toward the bottom of the helmet. Add another angled line between the eyes at the top too.

Draw Star-Lord 19

Step 19: Now draw Peter Quill's hair sticking out from the top of the helmet. Don't draw every individual hair strand. Instead draw the hair as a big clump using a series of curved lines. Notice that the hairline at the bottom uses curved lines that go toward the right on the right side and toward the left on the left side. The top part of the hair should be made up of short spiky lines. Add a few curved lines within the clump of hair for extra detail.

Draw Star-Lord 20

Step 20: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Star-Lord from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look, or continue to the next step for a more finished look.

Draw Star-Lord 21

Step 21: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then erase all of the pencil marks. You now have a finished inked drawing of Star-Lord! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Star-Lord drawing in its entirety.

Draw Star-Lord

Final Step: For a completely finished Star-Lord drawing, you have to color it. You can use anything you want: markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color the hair brown and light brown mixed together. Add a little bit of peach under the hair for the bit of skin that is visible. If you don't have peach, use yellow-orange or pink.

The rest of the helmet is gray except for the eyes, the section around the eyes and a small section on either side of the helmet. These sections are dark yellow, and the eyes are red-orange. You can also use a lighter gray on the gray sections of the helmet to give it more of a metallic shine. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Star-Lord from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.
