How to Draw Courage

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Cartoon Network's Courage the Cowardly Dog. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Draw Courage 1

Step 1: Start with a small circle near the top of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for Courage's head. Leave enough room at the bottom for his body.

Draw Courage 2

Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the head, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines a bit so that they contour to the shape. The vertical line is closer to the right side of the circle, while the horizontal line is closer to the bottom. These will be construction lines that will help you place Courage's facial features later on.

Draw Courage 3

Step 3: Draw two long ovals right above the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical line as guides for Courage's eyes. The oval on the right should be a bit smaller because of perspective.

Draw Courage 4

Step 4: Draw a long arc on the lower right side of the head as a guide for Courage's muzzle. The arc starts on the right side of the head near the bottom part of the eye and extends out, then curves down and in toward the bottom of the head.

Step 5: On top of the head, draw two lines as guides for Courage's ears. Angle the lines near the base to indicate where the ears will bend.

Draw Courage 6

Step 6: Under Courage's head, draw a circle as a guide for the bottom part of the body. The circle should be about the same size as the head.

Draw Courage 7

Step 7: Draw two curved lines that connect the two main circles to form the rest of Courage's body. The line on the left should be long and curved, and the line on the right should be very small.

Draw Courage 8

Step 8: Under the head, draw two curved lines as guides for Courage's arms. One of the lines is entirely inside the circle, and the other is outside. Below the body, draw two more lines as guides for Courage's legs and feet.

Draw Courage 9

Step 9: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of Cartoon Network's Courage the Cowardly Dog. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Draw Courage 10

Step 10: Draw thick, curved shapes on top of Courage's eyes for the eyebrows. Darken the edges of the initial ovals to create the eyes. Draw a small line under each eye to give Courage a worried look. Inside each eye, draw a small oval and shade it in for the pupils. Leave a little bit of it unshaded to represent glare on the eye.

Draw Courage 11

Step 11: Inside the shape of Courage's muzzle, draw a big triangle for the nose. The sides of the triangle should be curved. The right and bottom corner of the nose should touch the edge of the muzzle, while the left corner should touch the edge of the circle.

Draw Courage 12

Step 12: Use the big arc as a guide to draw Courage's muzzle. Follow the basic shape of the guide as you darken the lines to create the muzzle. Draw a smile line on the left side of the mouth below the horizontal construction line. Draw two curved lines at the tip of the muzzle near the nose.

Draw Courage 13

Step 13: Draw Courage's ears on top of the head by using the initial lines as guides. Follow the basic path of the lines as you make the ears thicker and rounder. The bases of Courage's ears should be short and thin.

Draw Courage 14

Step 14: Use the original circle as a guide to draw Courage's head. Draw a curved line on the left side to create the cheek above the smile line. Draw a few dots and lines on the tip of Courage's muzzle for the whiskers.

Draw Courage 15

Step 15: Draw Courage's arms under the muzzle using the curved lines as guides. Follow the path of the guides and make the arms thicker. At the end of each arm, draw three small curved lines for the individual fingers.

Draw Courage 16

Step 16: Use the lines under the body as guides to draw Courage's legs and feet the same way you drew the arms. Draw the curved lines at the end of each foot for the individual toes.

Draw Courage 17

Step 17: Darken the lines of the initial shapes to create Courage's body. Don't darken the top part of the initial circle. On the lower left side of the body, draw a shape with three pointed ends for Courage's short tail.

Draw Courage 18

Step 18: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of a Courage the Cowardly Dog. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look, or continue to the step below to go for a more finished look.

Draw Courage 19

Step 19: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then erase all of the pencil marks. You now have a finished inked drawing of Cartoon Network's Courage the Cowardly Dog! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Courage drawing in its entirety.

Draw Courage 20

Final Step: For a completely finished Courage drawing, you have to color it. You can use anything you want: markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color the body pink. The ears and nose are black with a bit of brown in them. The back has a couple of black spots, but because Courage is facing front, only a portion of them is visible. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Cartoon Network's Courage the Cowardly Dog.
