Draw Agnes (Despicable Me)
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Agnes from Universal Pictures' Despicable Me. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a circle near the bottom of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for Agnes's head. Leave room at the top for the tall pony tail.
Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the head, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so that they contour to the shape of the circle. These will be construction lines that will help you place Agnes's facial features later on.
Step 3: Draw two small shapes similar to half-circles as guides for Agnes's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line. Pay attention to the placement of the shapes in relation to the construction lines.
Step 4: On the lower left side of the head, draw a C-shaped line as a guide for Agnes's ear.
Step 5: Draw a long curved line on top of Agnes's head as a guide for the front part of the hair. The line should start at the top of the ear guide, move above the main circle and end on the top right side.
Step 6: Now draw the guide for Agnes's pony tail that sticks straight up. This guide is basically a really long and tall arc on top of the head. The arc's base at the bottom should be thin, while the curve at the top should be wide.
Step 7: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of Agnes from Despicable Me. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 8: Darken the initial half-circles using thick lines to create Agnes's eyes. On top of each eye, draw a few short, pointy, curved lines to represent the eyelashes.
Step 9: Inside each eye, draw a circle for the irises. Inside each iris, draw a tiny circle off to the side to represent glare. In the middle of each iris draw another circle and shade it in for Agnes's pupils.
Step 10: On top of each eye, draw a long thin shape to for Agnes's eyebrows. The eyebrow on the right should be a bit smaller than the one on the left because of perspective.
Step 11: Just under the section where the two construction lines intersect, draw Agnes's nose. The nose is basically a curved line on top with a few smaller curved lines at the bottom for the nostrils.
Step 12: Draw Agnes's mouth under the nose and above the bottom edge of the main circle. The mouth is a long curved line with a couple of smaller lines on the sides for the smile lines. Add a small line under the mouth for the lower lip.
Step 13: Use the main circle as a guide to draw Agnes's face. The line for the side of the face starts near the eyebrow on the right, then moves down and out a bit to form the cheek. After that, just follow the the basic path of the bottom edge of the main circle as you darken the line to create Agnes's chin and jaw.
Step 14: Agnes's hair is a bit tricky, so it's divided into three parts. First draw front part of the hair or the bangs. Draw the top portion of the bangs as a long curved line at the top edge of the main circle. Then add the bottom part of the bangs by drawing a long jagged curved line just above the eyebrows.
Step 15: Now darken the guide line above the bangs to create the top part of Agnes's head and hair. Draw a long curved line on the left side of the head for the long clump of hair in front of the ears. The clump of hair on the right is mostly hidden behind Agnes's face, so only draw the curled tip of it.
Step 16: Use the C-shaped line on the left side as a guide to draw Agnes's ear. Darken the outline to create the shape of the ear, then add a few lines within the shape for the ear's structure. Draw a couple of short lines under the head for the neck.
Step 17: Use the long arc on top of the head as a guide to draw Agnes's pony tail. First draw the hair tie at the base of the pony tail using a series of curved lines. Then follow the basic path of the initial arc as you darken the lines and create the pony tail. When you get to the top, use quick, short strokes to indicate the individual hair strands at the tip of Agnes's pony tail.
Step 18: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Agnes from Despicable Me. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look, or continue to the step below to go for a more finished look.
Step 19: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then erase all of the pencil marks. You now have a finished inked drawing of Agnes! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Agnes drawing in its entirety.
Final Step: For a completely finished Agnes drawing, you have to color it. You can use anything you want: markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color her hair and eyebrows black. Her hair tie is red, and her eyes are brown. Her skin is peach, but if you don't have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Agnes from Despicable Me.
