The written step-by-step video tutorial:

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Step 1: Draw a small, rectangular shape near the bottom of the page for the front part of the train. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. Make the left side of the shape curved. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. Make the left side of the shape curved. The final shape should be similar to a rectangle with a curved left side.

Step 2: For the first part of the train's chimney, draw a small rectangle sitting on top of the first shape.

Step 3: At the top, draw a diamond-like shape for the top part of the chimney on the train. The middle section of this shape should be wider than the top and bottom. Add a line across the middle.

Step 4: Below these shapes, draw two small circles for the train's front wheels. Make the two circles the same size. Their edges should almost touch. Inside each wheel, in the middle, draw a smaller circle.

Step 5: Around the small circles, draw a small, rectangular shape for the base of the train's wheels. Don't overlap the wheels as you draw the base. On the left side, draw two tiny lines for the base of the pilot.

Step 6: On the left side of the wheels, draw a small triangle for the train's pilot or cowcatcher. Draw a couple of sloping lines inside the pilot for the grates. At the top, add a small shape for the train engine's headlight.

Step 7: To the right, draw a small rectangle for the main part of the engine. You can make this shape longer if you want your train to have a bigger engine. On top of this shape, draw two more rectangles, a big one for a valve and a small one for a whistle.

Step 8: To the right, draw another rectangle for the bottom part of the train conductor's cab. If you'd like, you can make this section longer to create a bigger conductor cab. Above, draw a taller rectangle for the top part of the conductor's cab.

Step 9: Inside the top section, add a smaller rectangle for a window on the train conductor's cab. Above the cab, draw a thin, long rectangle with sloping sides for a little roof.

Step 10: At the bottom, draw two big circles for the train's main wheels. Make sure that the bottoms of these wheels are at the same level as the smaller front wheels. If you're struggling to draw these circles, just trace the outer edge of a coin, a lid or any object with a circular edge.

Step 11: Draw a small circle in the middle of the train's front wheel. Then draw a thin, long rectangle across both wheels. This thin rectangle is a rod that connects the wheels and makes them turn. Add a smaller circle inside each wheel. This smaller circle is the outer rim of the wheels. The rod should extend outside of the wheel on the right.

Step 12: On either side of the big circles, draw a series short lines for the base of the train's big wheels. You're basically drawing a big rectangle behind the wheels, so don't overlap the circular shapes.

Step 13: to the right, draw a big rectangle for the boxcar that carries the coal to fuel the train. Sketch lightly at first. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. You can make your boxcar bigger or smaller. Draw a design inside the rectangle to decorate your boxcar. You can draw whatever you want. For a simple design like this one, draw a stripe at the top and bottom and a diamond in the middle.

Step 14: Below the boxcar, draw three big half-circles for the wheels. At the top, draw a curved, wavy line for the mound of coal. Add a smaller circle inside each wheel too.

Step 15: Above the train's chimney and to the right, draw a series of clouds for the smoke. Use curved lines to draw the round puffs of smoke. Make them bigger the farther to the right they are.

Step 16: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your train drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.

Final Step: Color your train drawing using color pencils, markers or crayons! Use gray for the smoke clouds. Use blue for the main part of the engine, the chimney and the design on the coal car. Use black for the bottom part of the chimney, the base of the big wheels and the coal. Use red for everything else on the train except the front of the engine and the wheels. Use gray for the front part of the engine but leave a thin strip blank to make it shiny. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
