Materials You’ll Need

Before starting, gather these basic drawing supplies:

Sketch Guidelines

Building a solid initial sketch is key to getting your character's proportions right. Draw these simple shapes first before adding the details on Bluey.

Step 1: Establishing the Frame

  • Draw the Main Rectangle: On your drawing paper, sketch a long horizontal line for the top of the body guide, sloping it down slightly on the right side. Using light pencil strokes, add two long vertical lines for the sides that are almost twice as long as the top line, and close off the shape at the bottom.
  • Add Facial Guides: Place a long vertical construction line close to the left edge of the rectangle to help with drawing the facial features later. Draw a horizontal guide line about one-third of the way down from the top.
  • Outline Arm and Leg Guides: Draw a short diagonal line on the left side and a sloping line on the right side as placeholders for the arms. At the bottom, add two short vertical lines for the legs, tilting their tops slightly to the left.

Step 2: Drawing the Facial Features

  • Form the Muzzle and Nose: Lightly sketch a curved muzzle on the top left side, shaping it like the number five. Place the top section outside the rectangle and the lower curve to the right of your vertical guide line. Add a small triangle with curved corners on the top left for the nose.
  • Add the Teeth and Tongue: Darken the lines of the mouth without making it too wide. Inside the upper mouth, draw a couple of short curved lines to form a wavy row of teeth. Complete the mouth shape and add an interior curved line for the tongue.
  • Sketch Eyes and Eyebrows: Draw an oval for the right eye on top of the horizontal guide line and to the right of the vertical line. Create a small arc to the left for the other eye, keeping the lower portion hidden behind the muzzle. Place small ovals inside for the pupils, shade them in, and add two small rectangular eyebrow shapes with curved edges sloping downward.

Step 3: Defining the Body and Limbs

  • Create the Ears: Draw two large triangles at the top of the head. Use straight vertical lines for the left edges and sloping lines for the right, adding angled lines inside for the ear openings.
  • Build the Arms: Darken the left arm guide line and add an extra sloping line at the bottom to build thickness. Draw four small U-shaped fingers at the tip. Repeat for the right arm, but don't draw the palm line.
  • Structure Legs and Feet: Darken the vertical leg lines at the bottom and add thickness. Sketch curved shapes for the feet and use short curved lines to separate the toes. Darken the body rectangle, rounding out the corners, and add the thin tail on the bottom right side.

Step 4: Refining the Outline

  • Ink the Drawing: Trace over your final pencil lines with a black ink pen. Go slowly and carefully to avoid mistakes.
  • Erase Guidelines: Once the ink is dry, use a plastic eraser to remove the pencil guides to leave a clean character outline.

Final Tips for Drawing Cartoon Characters

Improving your drawing skills takes practice and patience. Keep these techniques in mind:
