How to Draw the Beast

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw the Beast from Walt Disney's Beauty and the Beast. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Draw The Beast 1

Step 1: Start by drawing a circle at the top half of the page. This will be the basic shape for the top part of the Beast's head. The circle doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide.

Draw The Beast 2

Step 2: Draw a big U-shaped, curved line under the circle as a guide for the Beast's chin and jaw. These shapes form the guide for the head.

Draw The Beast 3

Step 3: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the entire head, one vertical and one horizontal. The horizontal line should cut across the circle, while the vertical line should cross both the circle and the U-shaped line. Bend the lines a little so that they contour to the shape. These will be construction lines that will help you place the Beast's facial features later on.

Draw The Beast 4

Step 4: On top of the lower edge of the main circle, draw a small oval with a sideways orientation. This will be the guide for the bottom part of the Beast's nose.

Draw The Beast 5

Step 5: On top of the oval, draw an arc similar to an upside-down letter U as a guide for the top part of the Beast's nose.

Draw The Beast 6

Step 6: Draw two small ovals as guides for the Beast's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line. Notice that the oval on the right is covered partially by the guide for the Beast's nose.

Draw The Beast 7

Step 7: The Beast has a big head with a lion-like mane. Draw a curved line on either side of the head as a guide for this. The line on the left should be longer because of the perspective.

Draw The Beast 8

Step 8: On either side of the Beast's head, a bit higher than the previous guides, draw two more arcs as guides for the ears. These arcs should have a sideways orientation, and the arc on the right should be smaller because of the perspective.

Draw The Beast 9

Step 9: Now draw three more curved lines on top of the Beast's head as guides for the horns and the top part of the mane. The first line is similar to an upside-down U on the top left side of the head. Then in the middle, draw another curved line but this time longer and wider. On the left side of that, draw a smaller arc for the Beast's horn on the right side.

Draw The Beast 10

Step 10: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of the Beast from Walt Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Draw The Beast 11

Step 11: Above the Beast's eyes, draw a series of curved lines for the thick gorilla-like brow. The bottom part of the brow should overlap the guide for the eyes. The top part of the brow should go all the way up near the top edge of the main circle and should be composed of quick, short strokes to give it a furry look.

Draw The Beast 12

Step 12: Use the upside-down U shape in between the eyes as a guide to draw the bridge of the Beast's nose. Follow the basic path of the guide as you darken the line and make the shape point more toward the right. This top part should overlap the initial oval. Inside the shape, add a few lines to indicate the furry texture.

Draw The Beast 13

Step 13: Draw the Beast's nose under the shape created in the previous step by using the initial oval as a guide. Follow the basic path of the oval as you create the outer shape of the nose, which kind of resembles and upside-down triangle. On the lower left side of the nose, draw a small curved line for the nostril. On the top part, draw a line that dips down in the middle for extra detail.

Draw The Beast 14

Step 14: Darken the shapes of the Beast's eyes using a darker, thicker line. Draw a small circle inside each eye for the irises. In the middle of each iris, draw a big dot for the pupils. On the side of each pupil, add a tiny circle to represent the glare in the eyes.

Draw The Beast 15

Step 15: Under the nose, close to the bottom edge of the main circle, draw the Beast's bottom lip. The bottom lip is a long, thin shape consisting of curved lines. The Beast has somewhat of an underbite, so the top lip doesn't show. Add a line on the right side that connects the lip to the nose.

Draw The Beast 16

Step 16: On top of the lip, draw two small triangle-like shapes for the bottom teeth coming out of the Beast's mouth. On the left side of the nose and mouth, draw a couple of curved lines to add to the frown.

Draw The Beast 17

Step 17: Under the lip, draw the Beast's beard by using a series of curved lines. The beard connects to the lip on the left side and the middle. It also connects to it on the right but isn't visible from this perspective. The bottom of the beard is similar to the letter V. Draw it using quick, short strokes to make it furrier.

Draw The Beast 18

Step 18: Now draw the markings under the Beast's eyes by using a few jagged lines. The two outermost lines connect from the brow to the bottom. The line on the left goes all the way down to the beard, while the line on the right ends at the tooth, again because of the perspective. The innermost lines follow the same path but first go under the Beast's eyes.

Draw The Beast 19

Step 19: Use the lines on the sides as guides to draw the Beast's furry mane. Follow the path of the guides but use quick, short strokes as you darken the lines for a furry texture. Draw a couple of lines above the brow as well.

Draw The Beast 20

Step 20: Draw the Beast's horns by using the short arcs on top of the head. First draw the left outer portion of the horns as you follow the guide. When you get to the right, add the pointy tip using a curved line that goes back down toward the base.

Draw The Beast 21

Step 21: Use the arcs on the sides as guides to draw the Beast's ears. Follow the basic path of the arcs as you darken the lines but make the ears curve down more. Draw another line within the shape of the ear for the opening.

Draw The Beast 22

Step 22: Draw the top part of the Beast's head by using the line between the horns as a guide. Darken the line and add a few more jagged lines within the shape for a furrier texture. The line should extend to the left of the horn on the left. Add a couple more curved jagged lines on the inside of the head for extra detail on the Beast's fur.

Draw The Beast 23

Step 23: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of the Beast. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.

Draw The Beast 24

Step 24: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of the Beast! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Beast drawing.

Draw The Beast

Step 25: For a completely finished Beast drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! The Beast is made up of different shades of brown. The horns and the markings under the eyes are a very dark brown. The top part of the head, the nose and the lips are dark brown. The brow, the bridge of the nose and the beard are a very light brown. The rest of his fur is regular brown. If you don't have different shades of brown, just apply different pressure to get darker or lighter shades of brown. Finally color the Beast's eyes blue. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of the Beast from Walt Disney's Beauty and the Beast.
