The written step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Draw a circle near the top of the paper as a guide for Elena of Avalor's head. First make four small marks to indicate the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, trace the outer rim of a coin, a button or any other object with a circular edge.
Step 2: Draw a small, curved line under the circle as a guide for the jaw/chin. Don't draw this line too low, otherwise your Elena will end up with a big chin.
Step 3: Draw two intersecting lines inside the head, one horizontal and one vertical. These lines are construction guides that will help you place Elena's facial features later. Draw two short lines under the head as guides for the neck.
Step 4: Under the head, draw a horizontal line as the first part of the guide for the body. Below that, draw a big V-shaped line for the rest of the guide. Notice the size of this guide in relation to Elena's head.
Step 5: Below the big triangle, on the right side, draw a long line that's curved at the top as a guide for the dress that Elena of Avalor wears. On the left side, draw another long line that curves a bit at the top as a guide for the other side of the dress. Close off the bottom with a horizontal line to finish the guide for the dress.
Step 6: On the right side of the body, at the top, draw an angled line as a guide for Elena's first arm. At the bottom end of the line, draw a small circle as a guide for the hand.
Step 7: On the left side, draw similar shapes as the guide for Elena's other arm and hand. The circle at the bottom should be mostly hidden by the body.
Step 8: Below the dress, draw two short, angled lines as guides for the feet. Don't draw the lines too long, otherwise Elena will have big feet.
That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing.
Step 9: Inside the head, lightly sketch two small ovals for Elena's eyes. When you get the size and position of the eyes right, darken the eyes. Use the initial lines as guides to help you with the placement. As you darken the shapes, make the sides pointier like footballs. Add a few dark, spike- like shapes along the edges of the eyes for the eyelashes. Make the outer edges of the eyes thicker as you add the spiky eyelashes. Draw a short, curved line above each eye for Elena's eyelids.
Step 10: Inside each eye, draw a small circle for the irises. The iris on the left should be close to the right edge of the eye. The iris on the right should be near the middle of the eye. Inside each iris, off to the side, draw a tiny circle to represent glare. In the middle of each iris, draw a big dot for Elena's pupils. Don't overlap the tiny glare circles as you add the pupils.
Step 11: Above each eye, draw a dark, thick line for Elena's eyebrows. The eyebrow on the left should bend a bit near the left tip. The right side of the eyebrow should be thicker than the left side. The eyebrow on the right should be a bit longer, and it should bend closer to the middle. The shape of the eyebrow should be thick on the left side and gradually get thinner toward the right.
Step 12: Below the eyes, close to the left side, draw a curved line similar to a less-than sign (<) for the nose. To the right, draw a couple of short, curved lines for the nostril. Use the initial lines as guides for the position of the nose. Elena's nose should be close to the lower edge of the circle.
Step 13: Under the nose, draw a curved, horizontal line for the first part of the mouth. On top of this line, draw a shorter, wavy line for Elena's top lip. Under the first line, draw a short, curved line for the open mouth/teeth. Below that, draw a longer, curved horizontal line for the lower lip. Pay attention to the length of the mouth in relation to the nose.
Step 14: Use the initial shapes as guides to draw the lower half of the head. As you darken the left side, dip the line in toward the eye a bit. Below the eye, curve the line back to the left a bit to create the cheek. For the bottom part, just follow the path of the guide and darken the line. On the right side, only darken the line up to the edge of the initial circle for Elena's jaw.
Step 15: For the first part of the hair, draw a line that starts above the eyes, then curves toward the left. Slightly to the left, draw another long, curved line for the more of the hair that falls over Elena's face. To the left of the cheek, draw a wavy, spike-like shape for the tip of the clump of hair. Draw another wavy line that starts near the vertical guide, then slopes toward the right of the head. Sketch lightly at first to get the shape right. The tip of the line curves up a bit at the right. Add another line at the top that slopes to the right to create a rectangle- like clump of hair.
Step 16: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the top of the head. Draw a series of overlapping curved lines along the path of the circle to create the head/hair. On the left side of the head, draw a few flowers using simple shapes. Draw Elena's flowers using short, curved lines. Don't worry about making them too intricate. To the right of the eyes, draw a curved line for the clump of hair near her cheek. Add another line to complete the shape. This clump of hair shouldn't go lower than the jaw.
Step 17: Draw a curved line on the far right side for the bit of Elena's ear that's visible. Below the ear, draw an oval for the earring. Add a couple of curved lines inside to complete the shape of the hoop earring. On the left side, draw a curved line for the visible part of the other earring. Darken the lines under the head for the neck.
Step 18: Below the neck, draw a curved line for the top part of Elena's dress. Sketch lightly at first. When you get the shape right, darken the line. Add a short line on either side for the part of the dress that goes over the shoulders. Draw a wavy line below for the part of the dress that goes across the chest. Add a few short lines inside the shape for the folds on the cloth.
Step 19: Use the angled line on the right side as a guide to draw the first arm. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the arm around it. Keep the lines for the arm close to the guide so that the shape of the arm isn't too thick. Make the wrist thin. Use the circle at the bottom as a guide to draw the fist. Darken the circle but make the bottom flatter. Add a couple of lines on the left side for the folded fingers. Draw a couple of lines on the wrist for the bracelet that Elena of Avalor wears.
Step 20: Use the initial triangle shape as a guide to draw the torso. Darken the line on the left but curve it a bit more for the chest. Draw a couple of curved, horizontal lines in the middle to create Elena's belt. Inside the belt, near the left side, draw a couple of small rectangles for the buckle.
Step 21: Use the angled line on the left as a guide to draw the other arm the same way as the first. Follow the path of the guide and draw the shape of Elena's arm around it. The shape of the arm should be thinner at the wrist. Most of the fist will be hidden by the body, so only draw the visible top portion.
Step 22: Draw a long, wavy line on the right side for the rest of Elena's hair. Don't overlap the arm with this line. Only a small portion of the hair should be visible between the arm. The hair should end at the bottom with a curved, pointy tip below the fist.
Step 23: Inside the shape at the bottom, draw a long, curved line for the ruffled part of Elena's dress. This line should start under the belt, on the left side , then curve down and end on the lower, right side. Sketch lightly at first. When you get the path right, darken the line. On the left side of the dress, draw a series of wavy lines to create the ruffled pattern. The wavy lines should be narrow and close together at the top and gradually get wide and far apart at the bottom.
Step 24: Darken the guide on the left for the edge of the dress. Draw more wavy lines on the left side of the line for more ruffled cloth on Elena's dress. Just like before, the ruffles at the top should be small and then gradually get big toward the bottom.
Step 25: Darken the side of the guides to create the rest of Elena's dress. Don't overlap the ruffles. Darken the bottom part too. Add a line inside the shape for the folds on the cloth.
Step 26: Use the angled line below the dress, on the left side, as a guide to draw Elena's first foot. Draw a triangular shape around the guide. Sketch lightly at first to get the shape right. Make sure that the tip is pointy and add a small heel in the back. Inside the shape, draw a couple of curved lines for the fastener and the design.
Step 27: Use the angled line on the right side as a guide to draw the other foot the same way. Follow the path of the guide and draw the shape of Elena's foot around it. Use curved lines inside the shape to add the fastener at the top and the design at the bottom. Sketch lightly at first and only darken the lines when you get the shape right. Add the heel near the back.
Step 28: For a more finished look, carefully go over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker.
Step 29: After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.
Final Step: Color your Elena of Avalor drawing using color pencils, markers or crayons! Use dark brown for the hair. Use orange and green for the flowers in her hair. Color her skin light brown. Using pink, draw a series of scribbles for the pattern on the frilly part of the dress. Use red for the rest of the dress and for her lips. Use brown for part of the belt, the shoes, her eyes and a bit on her skin to create shadows. Use yellow-orange for the earrings and belt, blue-green for the bracelet, light yellow for the slip and a bit of pink on Elena's cheeks.
