Below you can watch a NEW step-by-step tutorial with NARRATED steps:
The following is an older video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.
Step 1: To draw Donald Duck, start off with a big circle in the middle of the page. This will be the basic shape for Donald's head.
Step 2: Next draw two intersecting lines across the circle. When drawing the lines, bend them so that they follow the contour shape of a sphere. Draw the horizontal line near the bottom of the sphere, and draw the vertical one slightly to the left of the middle. These will be construction lines that will help you place Donald Duck's features later on.
Step 3: Draw a small oval on top of the horizontal construction line just to the left of the vertical construction line. This will be Donald Duck's left eye. Draw another larger oval on the right side of the vertical construction. This will be the right eye.
Step 4: To draw Donald Duck's beak, first draw an arc in between his eyes. Draw this arc to connect the bottoms of his eyes. Starting from the lower left side of the left eye, draw a C shape that ends at the main circle. Do the same on the other side, starting from the lower right side of the right eye draw a backward C shape that ends on top of the horizontal construction line.
Step 5: From the point at which the backward C shape ends, draw a wide U that extends to the bottom left side of the main circle. Draw a similar shape within this one to indicate the inside of his mouth. This will be the bottom beak of this Disney cartoon character.
Step 6: Draw Donald Duck's top beak by drawing a short, flat C-shaped curve for the front of his beak, and then draw a wavy line for the side of his beak. This wavy line should start inside of the flat C shape, and extend to where the inner U shape (you created this earlier for his mouth) touches the horizontal construction line.
Step 7: Draw two arcs above Donald Duck's eyes to indicate his eyebrows. Using the main circle as a guideline, draw his head, which should be drawn inside the main circle.
Step 8: Next draw Donald's trademark hat. First, draw the base of it, which starts to the left of the vertical construction line. Draw a short curved line upward, and then bring the line down, following the shape of his head and tapering down to meet the back of his head.
Step 9: Now finish the top of Donald Duck's hat by drawing a large upside-down U that begins where the base began and curves down to the back of his head. Without touching this line down on his head, draw a smaller backward C that comes out to the right side, and then comes back in and touches the back portion of the hat’s base.
Step 10: That's it for the initial sketch of Disney's Donald Duck! You have the basic Donald Duck shape, so now you will go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 11: Start by darkening in Donald Duck's eyes and drawing small ovals on the lower right-hand edge of each eye. These will be the pupils of this Disney cartoon character.
Step 12: Darken in Donald Duck's beak and draw an arc at the edge of his smile to make a laugh line. Also, draw a small downward-pointing triangle inside his mouth. This will be Donald Duck's tongue.
Step 13: After you darken in Donald Duck's brows, give him three tufts of hair in between them. Also give him a bump on the right side of his head, where his head meets his beak.
Step 14: Once you darken in his hat, draw an upside-down W on the right end of it to indicate the ribbon that comes out of it.
Step 15: That's it! You now have a nice sketch of Disney's Donald Duck. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing the step below.
Step 16: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker and fill in his pupils. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Donald Duck! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Donald Duck drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Donald Duck drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Donald is a simple character to color. Color the main part of his hat blue. Color his eyes, the headband and ribbon portion of his hat black. His beak is an orange-yellow color. Color the inside of his mouth a light brown and his tongue pink. That's it! You now have a completed drawing of Donald Duck.
