The Narrated step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.
Step 1: Draw a circle as a guide for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit's head. First make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a bottle cap.
Step 2: Inside the circle, draw two intersecting lines. These are construction guides that will help you place Oswald's facial features later on. Curve the lines so that they contour to the shape of the oval. The vertical line should be to the left of center and the horizontal line should be close to the center of the oval.
Step 3: Below the head, draw an oval as a guide for the lower half of Oswald's body. Use the four marks method to draw this oval too. Pay attention to how small this oval is in relation to the head. Connect the oval to the head using short lines to complete the guide for the body.
Step 4: On the top, left side of the body, draw an angled line as a guide for Oswald's first arm. On the top tip of the line, draw a small circle as guide for the hand. On the right side of the body, draw a line that angles downward as a guide for the other arm. On the bottom tip of the line, draw a half circle as a guide for the other hand.
Step 5: Under the body, draw two short lines as guide for Oswald's legs. Pay attention to the length of the lines in relation to the rest of the body. Under each line, draw an oval-like shape as a guide for the feet. The shape on the left should be longer because that foot will be sideways.
That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Step 6: Inside the head, on top of the horizontal construction guide, draw two small ovals and shade them in for the eyes. Use the vertical construction guide as a guide to help you determine the space between the eyes. Under the eye on the left, draw another small oval and shade it in for the nose. The oval for the nose should be roughly the same size as the eyes but it should be sideways.
Step 7: Under the horizontal construction guide, draw a couple of curved lines for the shape of the open mouth. The right side of the mouth should be higher than the left. Inside the mouth, draw a couple of curved lines for Oswald's tongue.
Step 8: Darken the shape of the very first circle to create Oswald's head. Under the mouth, draw a short, curved line for the bottom lip. Above the eyes, draw a couple of curved lines for the pattern inside the head. These lines should be similar to the letter V. On the right side of the head, draw two more short, curved lines for more of the pattern.
Step 9: Use the lines on top of the head, as guides to draw Oswald's ears. Draw the shape of the ears around the guidelines. Sketch light at first and only darken the lines when you get the shapes right. Tho tops of the ears should be wide and round and the bottoms should be narrow.
Step 10: Use the shapes on the right side of the body as guides to draw Oswald's arm and had. Draw the shape of the arm around the guide line. Keep the edges of the arm close to the guide so that the shape is thin. At the bottom, draw a series of short, curved lines along the edge of the body for the fingers. Each finger should be similar to a sideways letter U. Darken the top and bottom of the initial arc to create the hand resting on the body.
Step 11: Use the shapes in the middle as guides to draw the rest of Oswald's body. Darken the outer edges of the guides to create the shape of the body. At the bottom, draw two small, rectangular shapes around the tops of the guides for the legs to create the shorts. Inside the body, draw a curved, horizontal line for the top edge of the shorts.
Step 12: Use the shapes on the left side of the body as guides to draw Oswald's other arm and hand. Draw the shape of the arm around the guideline and keep it skinny. Draw a series of small arcs on top of the small circle to create the fingers. The arc on the right side should be small as the thumb and the three other arcs should be a bit taller for the rest of the fingers.
Step 13: Use the shapes and lines under the body as guides to draw Oswald's legs. Draw the shapes of the legs around the vertical lines. Make the legs narrower at the top than at the bottom. Darken the oval-like shapes at the bottom to create the feet. Add a couple of lines inside the foot on the right to emphasize the shape pointing forward.
Step 14: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner Oswald drawing.
Final Step: Color your drawing using colored pencils, markers, crayons or anything else! Use black for the body, red for the tongue and blue for the shorts. That's it! You know how a finished drawing of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
